2nd Grade

2nd Grade

We are thrilled to now offer 2nd Grade as of fall 2017, as our students will continue to grow and develop in their academic and social skills. 

 In our Second Grade classroom, you will find:

  • A dynamic and experienced DPI-certified teacher
  • Small class size
  • Strong and effective oversight by program’s Executive Director and leadership team
  • Ongoing professional development, curriculum support and in-classroom mentoring for Jo’s teachers through a partnership with Cardinal Stritch University.
  • A state-of the art facility which has been furnished to meet the developmental needs of early elementary children
  • Access to current technology, including personal computers and tablets to reinforce early literacy, math and language skills
  • Opportunities to learn in an outdoor classroom space with a flower and vegetable garden
  • Weekly music education programming provided by the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music
  • Science and environmental education provided in partnership with Milwaukee’s Urban Ecology Center at Washington Park.
  • Spanish language within the daily curriculum
  • Ongoing support from the Milwaukee Public Library (Washington Park Location)
  • Educational field trips to locations such as the Milwaukee Public Museum
  • Nutritious and healthy meals prepared in a state-of-the-art kitchen
  • Collaboration with parents and families, including monthly parent outreach meetings
  • Before and After-care and Summer program options

About Our Curriculum:

Our First Grade curriculum is guided by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  Samples of our curriculum and standards are found below:

Reading/Writing

  • In addition, supplemental curriculum and instruction is used to support mastery of the common core state standards. 

Math

  • Engage New York - students gain exposure in the domains of number operations, sorting and comparing, algebraic thinking, shapes and fractions and understanding place value

Science

  • Inquiry based
  • Experimentation
  • Hands-on
  • Science Domains – physical, life, and earth
  • Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading Curriculum

Social Studies

  • Literature-based approach
  • Social studies instruction is combined with reading skills in the areas of literature and information texts (i.e. integration of knowledge and ideas, key ideas and details, etc.).
  • Social Studies Domains – problem solving, communication, community
  • Common Core State Standards

Art

  • Arts integration that builds off of language and literacy instruction
  • Students are supported through an innovative course which utilizes an arts integration approach to early language, literacy and child development. 

Music

  • Currently supported through a collaboration with The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.
